Most credit problems stay on your credit report for 7 years. If you file for bankruptcy, it stays on your credit report for 10 years.

If your credit report clearly shows that your problems are in the past, insurance companies might give you a break. If a bankruptcy or lots of late payments show up on old accounts and you can show that you’re paying your current bills on time, those companies may give you better rates.
