Information for the Non-Custodial Parent

Doing the Right Thing
As a parent, you want to do the right thing for your child. And that means giving your child the financial and emotional support s/he needs to be happy and successful.
What Is Child Support?
Child Support is money that goes to your child. A court order determines the monthly amount, and this will be based on how much you can afford and how much your child needs. Remember, although the check goes to the other parent, it is for your child.

How Does the Whole Process Work?
It varies from state to state, but basically, it’s these three steps:
  1. Paternity (who the father is) is established.
  2. The court establishes how much you will pay. This is called a Child Support Order.
  3. You pay a monthly check.
Health Care for Your Child
Support includes making sure your child is covered with health insurance. If your work provides family health insurance, this can be the easiest way to do this. If it doesn’t, there are other affordable insurance options for your child.

Your Child Always Needs Support
Remember, regardless of your circumstances, your child needs food and shelter every month, so it is important that you send your child support regularly. If, for some very good reason, you cannot pay support, you need to work this out with the child support enforcement agency. If you don’t do this, not only are you cheating your child, but you’re breaking the law.
