How Support Is Calculated and What It Includes

The amount of child support the child receives is calculated by state guidelines, and a court order determines exactly how much support your child will get.  States consider many things when figuring out the amount of the support, such as the non-custodial parent’s income and how much s/he can afford.

Keep this in mind:

  • Each state has its own rules to determine child support amounts.
  • By using a calculator, you are only getting an estimate. Only a court order can determine the exact amount.

In addition to a monthly support check, these benefits may also be included in a child support order:

  1. Medical insurance plan.
  2. Additional medical costs not covered by insurance.
  3. A plan for additional support in case a parent dies.
  4. If you have a child with disabilities, you may be able to extend the amount of time your child can get support (past the age of 18).
