What to Watch Out For

Fake Collection Agencies
Also, beware of the many child support collection agencies you find on the Internet. They may look and sound official, but many of them aren’t.

They charge expensive fees for services you can receive at no cost from your local child support enforcement agency or local community-based organization. Make sure you check the reputation of the organization and read the fine print before you make a decision.

Paying for Notary Public Services
Most child support agencies have a notary public on staff that can provide the service at no charge. The form to establish paternity requires notarization. Check with the office before you pay to have this or other forms notarized.

Also, in some countries notary public services can only be provided by attorneys. In the US, this is not the case. You may not be dealing with an attorney when you seek notary services and should not be charged attorneys’ fees.

Not Getting Information in Your Language

You have a right to receive information about child support in your native language from your local child support agency. If the agency cannot provide you with documents in your native language, they need to make interpretation services available. Speak to a lead worker or supervisor if you are not receiving information in a language you can understand.
